As so often happens, when we get cold weather it happens all of a sudden. Strong wind plus cold temperatures, combined with our humid climate, make for miserably bone-numbing conditions.
All weekend it's going to be very cold, with wind chill factors in the 'teens. The thought of riding in such weather turns me into a big-time wimp. Even with double socks, my feet are too cold. My heaviest gloves can't keep my hands warm enough. And my Clif Bars turn to rocks when it's cold.
I've read of keeping energy bars in a pocket of an inner layer of clothing, so body heat prevents their getting too hard. The trouble with that is getting said bars out when you want them. A skilled bike handler who can confidently ride no-hands might do all right, but I would not.
Gosh, I hear that wind a-blowin' now. I'm glad I'm not out in it.
