Bicycles are good for a lot more than getting exercise and bringing home the groceries. They can get you to events where parking a car can be a major headache, but parking a bike is simple.
This weekend is Steam Fest! Something in me must never have grown up, because this old train gets me as excited as a little kid. And a visit from the past doesn't happen every day. The train is parked only about two miles from where I live, so getting to it wasn't hard.
Just to walk alongside the train for a look-see is free. To actually go into the cars it cost $15. That must have been on the web site somewhere, but I missed it, and I didn't have enough cash. (It's cash-only, from what I could see. Fittingly old-fashioned, to match the train, maybe).
But about five years ago the old train was here, and that time I did get to visit the cars, and even ring the bell in the cab. It took a surprisingly hard tug at the cord to make it work.
And that locomotive is MASSIVE! The largest wheels must be close to five feet in diameter. A modern diesel locomotive looks small next to Old 745.
Maybe tomorrow I'll go out early on the road bike and put in my miles -- and then hop on the hybrid to ride over there for another visit to the past.
