If I were an aspiring, cycling-crazy teen, on the other hand, such sites as this ought to give me pause. Getting splattered with mud (that one poor rider looks like he got it right in the eye) -- or having your skin torn off -- all that traveling -- I think I'll skip it.
Going pro might mean becoming famous. No, thank you! I enjoy my privacy and anonymity; I'd quickly tire of being recognized and besieged for autographs, interviews, and so on every time I poked my nose outdoors. Worse, there's a thin line between fame and notoriety. Too many, whether pro cyclist or other celebrity, have slipped across that boundary.
So I'll just keep on riding for the pleasure of it. May it be the same for all of us recreational cyclists. "Happy trails to you..."
