My Garmin had been showing that I have a strong tendency to spend the lion's share of my ride time in my Zone 3, or "cruising". I knew I needed to step up my efforts for my century training.
Ergo three days ago I was working at getting my heart rate up into my Zone 4, or "tempo", according to how I had to program my Garmin. On the first effort, it took about 01'45" to get there. I tried to stay there at least a minute, then rode pretty easily for 4-5 minutes before making a second effort. It still took about 90 seconds to reach Z-4.
Difficulty in getting the HR to rise can mean fatigue. And for sure my legs really felt the effort! Or it can mean fitness. The Garmin's Recovery Check feature had told me that my recovery since my last ride (two days earlier) was Good.
Because of this rather annoying aspect of HR training, I'm thinking more and more of getting a power meter. But which one? Power meters are expensive, too. Any suggestions out there?
