Tour de France 2016 gets underway today! In honor of the big race, I'm wearing yellow!
I haven't had a TV for years, but I enjoy browsing through the online pics. My all-time favorite is one of Michael Rogers taking a bow on his bike upon winning Stage 16 of the 2014 Tour de France. He sure deserved it. It was his first stage win, and his TENTH Tour de France. I'll bet he felt way beyond Cloud Nine at the moment.
It's fun to see pics of the gorgeous countryside (what a shame that the riders can't enjoy the scenery!), all the color in the peloton, and I love Team Astana's pretty, sky-blue kit. It's my favorite color! It's not so fun seeing pics of the aftermath of the occasional, horrific, multi-rider crash. We have to remember just how fast those riders are going!
I've seen old photos of Eddy Merckx (aka "The Cannibal") riding in the Tour during his heyday. [GASP!!] No helmet! That's unthinkable nowadays, but it seems to have been the norm back then. Maybe they weren't bombing down mountainsides at 60 mph then, either.
How the various winners' jerseys got their colors is another interesting aspect of TdF. Re: the maillot jaune, an alternate explanation is that yellow was the easiest color of jersey to get on short notice, as yellow was an unpopular color at the time. I read something somewhere about the sprinter's jersey being sponsored by a company that manufactured a lawn mower; that's why it's green. I like that about the polka-dot jersey matching the sponsor's candy bar wrapper. I would! My sweet tooth has always been all out of proportion to my size.
May the peloton have tailwinds, sunny skies, and no crashes!!
